Refuge, Cities of

Were six in number (Numbers 35). 1. On the west of Jordan were (1) Kadesh, in Naphtali; (2) Shechem, in Mount Ephraim; (3) Hebron, in Judah. 2. On the east of Jordan were, (1) Golan, in Bashan; (2) Ramoth-Gilead, in Gad; and (3) Bezer, in Reuben. (See under each of these names.)

1. (n.) Shelter or protection from danger or distress.

2. (n.) That which shelters or protects from danger, or from distress or calamity; a stronghold which protects by its strength, or a sanctuary which secures safety by its sacredness; a place inaccessible to an enemy.

3. (n.) An expedient to secure protection or defense; a device or contrivance.

4. (v. t.) To shelter; to protect.
